Introduction

The AMI DensiPyc 1000S Series delivers precise, repeatable true density and true volume measurement for small sample quantities. Designed for limited, valuable, or difficult-to-prepare materials, the system combines advanced gas pycnometry with intelligent automation and flexible small-volume sample cells.

With sample cups from 10 cm³ down to 1 cm³, the DensiPyc 1000S supports reliable density, volume, and porosity analysis when standard sample sizes are not practical. Automated sealing, intelligent reference volume selection, optional temperature control, and optional vacuum pretreatment help reduce operator dependence and improve confidence in every reported value.

All models comply with ISO 12154, ASTM D4892, B923, C604, C830, DIN 66137, and USP <699> for gas displacement density measurement using helium or nitrogen.

KEY DIFFERENTIATORS

The AMI DensiPyc 1000S brings the automation and reliability of the DensiPyc platform to small-sample true density analysis, combining precision engineering with features specifically designed for limited or high-value materials.

Small Sample Cell Configuration

Sample cups of 10 cm³, 6 cm³, 3.5 cm³, and 1 cm³ allow accurate true density testing when material availability is limited or sample cost is high. Each cell size is engineered for volumetric accuracy optimized to its specific volume, enabling reliable results even from milligram-scale specimens.

Automated Sample Chamber Sealing

An automated mechanical sealing system applies consistent sealing force and positioning for every measurement. This eliminates the variability introduced by manual tightening — a common source of run-to-run inconsistency in traditional pycnometers — and significantly improves repeatability across users and test runs.

Intelligent Reference Volume Management

The system automatically matches the optimal reference volume configuration to the selected sample cup. This minimizes dead volume effects and improves volumetric accuracy across all small sample sizes, removing the need for manual reference volume selection by the operator.

Optional Temperature Control (TC models)

Integrated temperature control from 3–60°C, via a Peltier module, provides stable test conditions for materials sensitive to environmental temperature changes. Temperature stability of ±0.01°C and accuracy of 0.001°C ensure reproducible results across sessions and laboratories.

Optional Vacuum Pretreatment (V models)

Integrated vacuum pretreatment supports removal of residual gases or moisture from the sample before analysis, via an internal pump to 10 kPa. This improves sample conditioning and measurement repeatability for hygroscopic, porous, or moisture-sensitive materials, while maintaining a compact, single-instrument workflow without the need for a separate external degasser.

MODEL COMPARISON

The DensiPyc 1000S Series is available in multiple configurations to match laboratory workflows and application requirements:

DensiPyc 1000S

Designed for routine small-volume true density and true volume measurements using 10 cm³, 6 cm³, 3.5 cm³, and 1 cm³ sample cups. The standard configuration for R&D and QC environments where ambient temperature operation is appropriate.

DensiPyc 1000S TC

Adds active temperature control (3–60°C, Peltier-controlled, ±0.01°C stability) for materials sensitive to laboratory temperature fluctuations. Recommended for hygroscopic powders, temperature-sensitive formulations, and applications requiring measurement traceability across controlled conditions.

DensiPyc 1000S V

Includes integrated vacuum pretreatment (to 10 kPa) for samples requiring removal of moisture or residual gases prior to analysis. Suitable for porous battery materials, catalyst powders, and pharmaceutical actives where pre-conditioning improves measurement stability and result confidence.

Combined Configurations — Temperature control and vacuum pretreatment may be specified individually or together, allowing the DensiPyc 1000S to be configured for routine QC, advanced R&D, or demanding material characterization applications.

APPLICATIONS

The AMI DensiPyc 1000S is engineered for accurate and repeatable true density measurements where small sample volume is important. Its combination of precision, automation, and flexible sample cell configurations makes it the instrument of choice across research and quality control environments handling limited, valuable, or difficult-to-prepare materials.

Battery and Advanced Materials

Measure the true density of cathode powders (LiFePO₄, NMC, NCA), anode materials (graphite, silicon-carbon composites, porous carbon), and electrolyte additives — critical for electrode compaction density optimization, volumetric energy density calculations, and batch-to-batch QC. The 1 cm³ cell configuration supports analysis of early-stage materials when only small quantities are available.

Catalysts and Catalyst Supports

Determine true (skeletal) density of catalyst powders, pellets, and washcoat supports for accurate porosity calculations, formulation consistency control, and production QC. The small cell volumes accommodate precious metal catalysts and specialty supports where sample availability is restricted.

Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals

Analyze active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), excipients, granules, and drug substance intermediates when only small sample quantities are available from early synthesis or high-potency compounds. True density supports formulation control, tablet uniformity, and porosity assessment of granulated materials.

Additive Manufacturing Powders

Evaluate metal and polymer powders used in 3D printing for powder qualification, particle density verification, lot-to-lot comparison, and process control. Precise true density distinguishes skeletal density from bulk and tap density, directly informing powder bed performance in laser sintering and binder jetting systems.

Polymers, Ceramics, and Specialty Materials

Analyze small prepared samples, research specimens, powders, and granules across development, QA, and performance evaluation workflows. The DensiPyc 1000S accommodates the full range of specialty material types from aerogels and zeolites to technical ceramics and advanced polymers.

From early-stage R&D through production quality control, the DensiPyc 1000S delivers the data confidence needed to make informed decisions about material consistency, process stability, and product performance.

SOFTWARE & WORKFLOW

The DensiPyc 1000S software combines guided workflows with automated data handling to simplify small-sample density analysis while maintaining rigorous measurement control. Designed for both novice and experienced users, it minimizes setup time, reduces operator-dependent variability, and delivers traceable, reproducible results across all sample types and laboratory environments.

Fast Test Mode

Predefined test routines allow standardized measurements to be started with minimal parameter setup. This simplifies operation for routine quality control workflows, maintains consistent test conditions across operators, and makes the system well-suited to high-throughput environments where test-to-test consistency is critical.

Intuitive Data Processing and Reporting

Automated data processing and one-click report generation streamline result evaluation and documentation. Measurement data can be exported in PDF, TXT, and Excel formats. Built-in comparison tools support historical and batch-to-batch review, helping laboratories identify trends in density and porosity over time.

Integrated Touchscreen Interface

The integrated touchscreen displays instrument status, test progress, and key parameters in real time. The graphic user interface (Figure 2) provides a clear, efficient operating environment for daily use, with access to test configuration, pretreatment settings, and reporting from a single screen.
